We have a hard time with the truth. I’ll tell you what, too, we come up with incredibly elaborate explanations to excuse our choices.
We want our own ways. I think that much is obvious.
I have to admit, the majority of my friends have been the ‘yes but’ people and the reason I have no friends now is total friendship burnout. People flake, people cancelling, tip-toeing around on egg shells, the burden of it just became too fucking irritating.
It feels like there’s little simplicity left.
And here’s the other thing, we live in a permissive society rather than a confident one. We’re always tentative because we don’t want to ‘offend’. We don’t wasn’t to put our heads on the block.
I notice conversations take so much longer to get going. We’re obsessively trying to find out what mental state people are in! No simplicity, no straightforwardness. Lead with the pertinent info, if people are too shocked by it that relationship likely isn’t going anywhere anyway.
I was at a family recently and I let rip how right wing I am at them and I can still picture my young cousin’s totally baffled face when I said we shouldn’t be fighting in Russia. I might as well’ve been an alien and I feel sort of guilty for billowing out such a contrary onslaught but when you’ve heard varying degrees of ‘Lefty’ it just gets too irritating to listen to anymore.
Lead with what you believe, with what you have arrived at reasonably. Trust yourself and understand you’re a human being developing all the time. Mis(s-)takes are only a problem if you refuse to surrender your ego.
The ‘yes+’ people are never happy, it’s their choice, leave ‘em to it.
